Governor inaugurates Karuna Cultural Centre at Majhitar

GANGTOK, 11 July [IPR]: Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh, who is also the Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, inaugurated the Karuna Cultural Centre, a unit of the Majhitar Cultural Trust at the auditorium hall of the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) here today.
In his address, the Governor commented that SMIT has become a major attraction of Rangpo and remarked that the Karuna Cultural Centre has been created to bring the people of Rangpo and its surrounding areas together in socio-cultural activities, an endeavour which the large number of private institutions and industries in the area should come forward for and assist. 

“Under the able guidance of Ms Neeru Sewa, who is also the area MLA, and Brig. SS Pabla, the former Vice Chancellor of SMU whose complete interest in this Centre and the involvement of the people will surely craft a good example in the State,” the Governor said.
Brig. Pabla, while presenting a brief introduction on the Majhitar Cultural Centre, said that the Karuna Cultural Centre was the first undertaking of the trust to honour the memory of the late First lady of Sikkim, Mrs Karuna Singh, the wife of Governor BP Singh.
Ms. Sewa, in her address, mentioned that the Karuna Cultural Centre was conceptualised during the Governor’s interactions with the people of Rangpo and surrounding areas. She expressed confidence that the Centre will be used for pragmatic works and extended her gratitude towards the Governor for boosting the morale of the people.
She also commended that SMIT has played a major role in converting the small hamlet of Majhitar and Rangpo into a major socio-cultural hub and a centre for technological learning.
Earlier, the programme started with a welcome address by Brig. Somnath Mishra, and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr Salhan.
The function was also attended by HRD Minister NK Pradhan, Forest Minister Bhim Dhungel, Health Minister DN Thakarpa, the new Vice Chancellor of SMU, Brig. Somnath Mishra, former VC, Brig. SS Pabla, PRO Chancellor, RN Salhan and other officials of the State Government and SMU and students.
