Orchid Show inaugurated, winners unveiled

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling inaugurated the annual Orchid Show 2015 at the Flower Exhibition Centre here at the Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal Memorial Park at the Ridge on 17 March, Tuesday. An official press communiqué informs that the inaugural ceremony was attended by Ministers and senior officers of various departments, with students from different schools from in and around Gangtok also invited. Although the display at the flower show complex is a year-round affair, the Orchid Show is ceremonially inaugurated every year on 17 March.
The ceremonial inauguration marks the beginning of the open competition among interested flower growers in special categories of orchid displays and the unveiling of the prize winners.
The Chairman of the Sikkim Flower Show Committee apprised the Chief Minister that this year the flower show committee was planning to hold an October Show for the first time. This October show will stress only on species orchids and not hybrids. This is in order to emphasize on the importance of wild species of orchids and their need for conservation. Since not much importance is given to wild varieties these are gradually being abandoned to the backyard of the growers collection and has lost its importance. It would be quite an achievement if by holding simple annual show the message of conservation and propagation of wild species of orchids can be encouraged, the organizers believe.
“Such competitions encourage people to undertake commercial growing of orchids and contribute to conservation efforts with enthusiasm. Besides such competitions creates awareness about orchids, amongst future generation. During this March show, hybrid cymbidium orchids dominate the competition,” the organizers inform.
The judging this year was done by eminent orchid experts of West Bengal and Sikkim namely Udai Pradhan, Tej K. Pradhan and Sudizong Lucksom.
