Substance abuse warnings put up at FML shops REBYNA RANA

GANGTOK, 25 July: Signage boards announcing the prohibition of consumption and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances have been put up at liquor shops across the State. This, the Excise Department informs, has been done on the directions of the Narcotic Control Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, which is the nodal agency for Drug Law Enforcement.
As per the Ministry’s directions, all licensed liquor vendors like shops and bars in the country have been directed to have this board displayed prominently.
While talking to NOW!, Principal Secretary Excise Department, Arun Kumar Yadav, informed that this initiative has been taken by the Ministry to help control the rampant abuse of drugs by youth especially school and college students.
He requested all liquor vendors of the state to cooperate in the mission by displaying the notice board at their licensed premises in the prescribed size on white matted piece of steel or other suitable material in black letters.
It has been almost a month since the directions came from the Ministry which is mainly focusing on the Pub and Bar Shops, since the sale of narcotic drugs have been found to be most prevalent in pubs and restaurants in places like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, etc, informed Mr Yadav.
But in case of Sikkim, such notice boards are being put up in Foreign Liquor Retail Shops and Foreign Liquor Bar Shops to make the people even more aware, he stated, adding that drug abuse was a social problem requiring collective support from the police, NGOs, youth, government and society as a whole.
Meanwhile, according to data for the financial year 2013-14, the department has issued/renewed licenses of 970 Foreign Liquor & Country Liquor Retail Shop, 902 Foreign Liquor Bars, 55 Pachwais, 23 Methylated Spirit, 43 Army Units, 08 Distributor of SMFL/Beer, 01 Distributor of IMFL and 08 Sub-Distributor.
