DWAS condemns police action against students, welcomes crackdown on rioters

GANGTOK, 21 July: Denzong Welfare Association Sikkim, in a press release issued today, has condemned what it calls the “mayhem” which played out from 15 to 17 July in Gangtok. “It is our request to all the authorities concerned in the State Govt to greatly empathize on the concerns and issues raised by any section of our societies without discriminating them in coming days,” appeals a press release issued by president, Denzong Welfare Association, Phurba Sherpa.
The organization convened a meeting at its office in Development Area on Saturday to “discuss and examine” the situation created by the sudden hike in fees at government colleges.
The organization believes that the Minister and concerned officials should have taken the students into confidence after fees hike in colleges. “Lack of empathy shown, in the beginning, by the Minister concerned and the officials paved the way for the students to become agitated and come on the road to protest, in a democratic manner, against the injustice done to them by the authorities concerned,” the meeting agreed.
The members further agreed that the police action of 15 and 16 July was barbaric and unjustified.
The organization further believes that on the third day, 17 July, “miscreants and anti-social elements exploited the mob created by protestors” leaving the police no option but to lathicharge and release tear gas. DWAS has however thumbed down the use of date-expired tear gas. Again, it has welcomed the arrest of people involved in the rioting.
