SIRD celebrates Paryavaran Mahotsav

GANGTOK, 26 June: State Institute of Rural Development [SIRD], Karfectar took part in the ‘10 Minutes to Earth’ programme on 25 June at SIRD campus as part of week-long Paryavaran Mahotsav being celebrated across the state. The programme was organized in collaboration with North East Rural Livelihoods Project [NERLP] and the state Forest Department.
A press release informs that saplings were planted in the institute’s campus on the day while the saplings planted last year by SIRD and NERLP in the ‘10 Minutes to Earth’ programme were also taken care of by weeding, feeding manure and other protective measures to ensure the survival and growth of the plants. 
A cleanliness drive in the campus of the Institute was also conducted. Two research scholars from Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development [RGNIYD],  Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu and a team of 41 members of PRI from Jharkhand who are on an exposure visit to SIRD were also involved in the programme. They were sensitized about the mission and vision of Sikkim Government towards environmental concerns, the release mentions.
SIRD Director, Suchitra Rasaily delivered the welcome address where she informed about the aims and objectives of the ‘10 Minutes to Earth’ initiative. She also elaborated on the vision of the government of Sikkim in observing Paryavaran Mahotsav.
This was followed by a motivational talk delivered by State Coordinator of NERLP, DT Bhutia about the need for undertaking such important environmental conservation and development programmes. He urged the participants to think globally and act locally to meet the future challenges cropping up from environmental degradation.

In the end, the Director of the Institute thanked all the participants for their contribution towards the cause of environment.
