Alkem employee dies of electrocution, company’s indifference hurts family

NAMCHI, 29 Apr: The family of an employee of Alkem Laboratories Limited, Samardung, South Sikkim, near Rangpo who died of electrocution on Saturday, has alleged that the pharmaceutical company has not offered any assistance or support following the death of its worker.
Ajay Diyali, son of Saran Kr. Diyali of Kalimpong, was employed as a Trolley Driver with Alkem Laboratories and died of electrocution at home at around 4:30 pm on Saturday. When Ajay Diyali returned to his rented room after duty, he was electrocuted following a short circuit that had charged the entire room with electric current.
Bijay Diyali, the brother of the deceased, said that even though his brother was working on contract basis, reportedly hired through a labour contractor, it was the duty of the company to take some responsibility and at least extend some support. The company only provided an ambulance and no company official has met or offered support to the deceased’s family, it is informed.
The deceased is survived by a child and ageing parents.
The company is of the view that since the deceased was hired through a labour contractor, it was not their responsibility to look into the matter, said Bijay Diyali. However, he added that a company like Alkem Laboratories Limited should have insurance facilities for their employees which should be extended to his deceased brother as well.
Efforts to contact the Human Resource in charge of the company over the phone for clarifications proved futile.
