SSP demands better public distribution of essential commodities

GANGTOK, 08 Jan: The Sikkim Sangram Parishad has come out strongly against the state government on several fronts especially on matters of food and distribution policy of the ruling front. The party in a press release alleges that essential commodities are seeing an inflationary trend making it difficult for those living below poverty line. It alleges that there is shortage of such commodities controlled through the public distribution system such as rice, sugar, kerosene oil, LPG, etc.
The SSP states that the quotas of such items are not sufficient for the people especially in the festive seasons. In this regard the SDF government has not apprised the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies, to increase the quota. The party has also alleged that the quotas as provided by the ministry are being diverted.
On the matter of LPG the SSP alleges that the state department has not been able to monitor its distribution by sub agencies including in matters of measurement and weight of the cylinders. It has criticized the government for not complying with IOC regulations that say that the cylinder has to be delivered at the houses of the consumers. Instead people have to stand in long queues and lose a day of productive work.
The SSP has also lambasted the government on the matter of ration cards which it says has now become a matter of harassment for the people. Some time ago the government had collected the old ration cards on the assurance that new ones would be issued. Relevant documents had also been collected for the purpose. However, the SSP claims that the new ration cards have not been provided till date and there is no explanation from the government.
