SDF Melli counters and condemns Golay’s statement

GANGTOK, 28 Jan: Sikkim Democratic Front party organized a meeting at SDF Office, Melli today. The meeting was organized in order to express strong objection against the statement given by Sikkim Krantikari Morcha [SKM] leader, PS Tamang [Golay] in few local dailies published on 26 January, 2014, in which he accused SDF government of step-motherly treatment of the constituency.
An SDF release has condemned allegations of Melli being a backward area and not enough being done by the state government about the area being drought prone. Condemning the statement of Mr. Golay as untenable and absurd, the meeting argued that the government has been working towards mitigating the challenge of water scarcity which is corroborated by the fact that about Rs 36 crore has been spent during the last four years because of which more than 600 families are covered under roof water harvesting and every household has connectivity to tap water.
Apart from this, the government has initiated a process of recharging water sources through Dhara Vikash which is already showing results, the release mentions. The meeting has advised Mr Golay to look into these facts before making such an untenable and uninformed comment based on hearsay.
The party has stated that Mr Golay's claim regarding Melli Constituency being the most backward constituency in the village is nothing more than a desperate attempt to spread negative information about the constituency. Melli Constituency tops the lists in Panchayati Raj, Dairy and Poultry Farming and vegetable cultivation which is evident from various awards bagged by Panchayats of the constituency, the most recent being the State Award won by a Lungchok farmer at the Agri-Horti Show 2014 and felicitation of a tomato grower of Turuk during Republic Day Celebrations in Gangtok, it is mentioned.
The meeting agreed that Melli Constituency has been progressing by leaps and bounds due to good governance under Chief Minister Pawan Chamling. Melli takes pride in having the first Cyber Village in India which speaks volume about the progress made by the Constituency in the field of Information Technology, the release adds.
The meeting also pointed out that since the inception of SKM led by Mr Golay, it has been thriving only on criticism and vandalism which clearly exposes the hollowness that has engulfed the party. Melli Constituency have given full mandate to SDF and Mr Golay’s baseless and untenable comments cannot garner any importance, the release states.
The meeting expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chief Minister and Area MLA for every support extended to the constituency.
