Jorethang Maghey Mela concludes

JORETHANG, 16 Jan: The three-day Jorethang Maghey Mela 2014 was declared officially closed by the Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, KT Gyaltsen. He was present as the chief guest of the valedictory function held today here at the public ground, Jorethang. Speaker Mr. Gyaltsen was given a warm welcome by the mela organizing committee. He also visited the departmental stalls and the traditional huts.
The main attraction of the closing day was the final of the ongoing Inter-Constituency Football Tournament 2014 which was played between the teams of Daramdin and Yangthang constituency. The match ended in a draw and Daramdin won the match in the tie-breaker.
The winning team was awarded cash prize of Rs. 30,000 and a trophy while the runner-up team received 20,000 and a trophy.
With this official closing of the mela, all the departmental stalls have been closed while the Saras fair will continue till 23 January. River rafting, Tambola, paragliding and the wholesale stalls will continue at the river bank of Rangeet.
As usual, thousands of visitors from different corners of the state as well from outside visited the Jorethang mela this year.
While talking to this correspondent, area MLA cum Chief Patron of the Mela Organizing committee Madan Cintury said that, the mela at Jorethang this year was a big success. On behalf of the organizing committee, he thanked the Governor Shriniwas Patil and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for visiting the mela.
General secretary of the Organizing Committee, Kamal Chettri thanked all those who contributed in making the mela a success.
The draw of the postponed raffle of All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2013 was also held today in the presence of SDM Jorethang, Tenzing D Denzongpa, OC Jorethang PS, PI Sonam Wangdi and SE RMDD, Kewal Sharma.
In the evening, Indian Idol 4 finalist Saurabhi rocked the stage marking the closing of the three-day Maghey Mela at Jorethang while local artists also shared the stage.
The closing ceremony today was also attended by In-Charge Jorethang constituency and also the political advisor to the Chief Minister, KN Rai, Tenzi Sherpa and government officials.
