GANGTOK, 21 Jan: The results of the Teachers Eligibility Test are finally out and as per information received, 33.5% of the candidates who appeared for the exams have passed. The first TET for Sikkim was conducted by the Human Resource Development Department in the last week of November 2013 where a total of 821 candidates appeared. 40% of those who appeared for the exams are ad-hoc or contractual candidates.
Out of the total 821 candidates who appeared for the TET, 275 candidates have passed, informed Deepak Pradhan [Director, Technical Education, HRDD], while speaking to NOW! today. This comes to a pass percentage of 33.5% where female candidates have fared better than their male counterparts.
While the exact figures are not available, a good number of those candidates who have failed are teachers who were on ad-hoc or temporary appointment. It is informed that those ad-hoc teachers who have failed the TET will not have their contracts renewed and will be let go at the end of their service. They will, however, be eligible to sit again for the TET when it is held next, and if they pass, will be eligible for appointment again.

The Director further informed that a candidate would be given as many chances as one wished to sit and pass the TET exams till they reach the age limit for joining government service [30 for general and 35 years for the rest]. Those candidates who have failed their TET exams this time can sit for the exams in June or July, later this year for which the dates will be announced by the department on a later date, he informed.
Passing the TET exam is now a mandatory requirement for any teacher [Graduate or Primary] under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 and Sikkim is one of the last states to have initiated and completed this process. The TET is also mandatory criteria required to be fulfilled just like the requirement of a B.Ed. degree for the post of a Graduate Teacher and a 2-year diploma in elementary education, TTI passed for primary teachers.
