Four students receive Tulasha Devi Memorial Award in Tumin

DIKCHU, 13 Dec: Four students were conferred the Tulasha Devi Memorial Award today at a special function held at Tumin Barang in East Sikkim.
Among the awardees, two students are from Vidhya Bharati School, Lower Tumin. Ritika Sharma was the class V topper of the year 2012 and Rajesh Chettri was the class V topper of the year 2013. The other two students are from Tumin Barang School; Jigmee Wangchuk Lepcha, class V topper of the year 2012 and Yogita Chettri, class V topper for the year 2013. The chief guest presented certificates of merit and cash prizes to the four students.
Geeta Path competition was held during the day wherein Saraswati Vidhya Niketan stood first followed by Tumin Barang School and Raley JHS in second and third positions respectively.
In the morning session, the function had Zilla member, Hemraj Adhikari as the chief guest while in the second session, former Secretary, LB Chettri was the chief guest.
Delivering the welcome address, Secretary RMDD, DR Nepal who is also the president of Tulasha Devi Memorial Trust underlined that the trust was started to give students a platform and encourage them in academics.
“Since the government is doing a lot to provide quality education and improve literacy in the state, we should also contribute for such a good cause”, he added.  Mr. Nepal further appealed to local NGOs to conduct such debate competitions for children and added that the trust will sponsor such programmes.
It may be mentioned here that the Tulasha Devi Memorial Trust, established in the year 2007 has been conferring awards on students since then. The trust was instituted in the memory of Late Tulasha Devi Nepal, wife of Shriman Dharmananda Nepal and in honour of the sacrifices she made for the education of her children. The award seeks to encourage students in academics at the elementary level and also to motivate teachers and guardians of pupils of the two Primary schools of Barang ward of Tumin, East Sikkim. The trust also supports events like poetry writing and recitation, painting, traditional music and dance, etc.
Zilla member Hemraj Adhikari in his address highlighted the importance of education and appreciated the initiative. A colourful cultural programme was also presented by children of different schools. The function ended with a vote of thanks proposed by Daddhi Ram Nepal and was attended by students, teachers, guardians, representatives of NGOs, committee and local gentries.
