Awareness workshop held for SSB personnel on human trafficking REBYNA RANA

GANGTOK, 29 Nov: An awareness workshop on human trafficking was organized by Social Subha Laxmi Organisation [SSLO] at the Sashastra Seema Bal headquarters here today.
Sensitizing the SSB personnel on human trafficking, advocate Dr. Doma Bhutia said that the problem exists not only in India but plagues on a global scale. Human smuggling is a crime against the state due to violation of immigration laws and also violates the rights of an individual, she said. Sexual slavery, forced labour, extraction of organs or tissues, including surrogacy and ova removal are some of the reasons for human trafficking, she informed.
Dr. Bhutia highlighted other issues like unemployment and poverty which contributed to human trafficking. While the drug trade tops the crimes list, human trafficking follows close behind, she said. She further stressed on the need for proper rehabilitation measures for victims of human trafficking and the need for more such workshops.
Chief guest, member of State Planning Commission, former MLA R. Ongmu, who is also an advisor to SSLO, in turn said that SSB plays a vital role in protecting the nation’s borders. Conveying her gratitude to the SSB for its efforts she called upon SSB’s personnel to take care of every mother, sister and daughter of the nation.
She further stressed on creating more awareness on human trafficking in the state. The SSB Deputy Commandant Praful Kumar also addressed the workshop. The workshop was also attended by the general secretary, SSLO, Uttam Chhetri, SSB personnel including SSLO members.
