SU Zoology Deptt organizes seminar on climate change

GANGTOK, 10 Nov: A national seminar on “Biodiversity Conservation in the face of Climate Change in the Himalaya” was organized by the newly established Department of Zoology, Sikkim University on 08 November at the Conference Hall, Forest Secretariat, Deorali, Gangtok.
The inaugural session started with the introduction of the programme by the Organizing Secretary of the seminar and Head of the Department of Zoology, Sikkim University, Dr. Basundhara Chettri.
A press release informs that Vice Chancellor, Sikkim University, Prof. T.B. Subba inaugurated the Seminar. He highlighted that our ancestors were better equipped with information about biodiversity conservation based on their traditional knowledge.
Dr Pradeep Mool, Scientist, ICIMOD, Kathmandu, Nepal delivered a plenary talk on “Climate Change and its Impacts in the Hindu Kush Himalayas” in the inaugural session. He highlighted the impacts of climate change on Glaciation in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. Dr Mool stressed that sharing of information across the country in the Hindu Kush Himalaya will reduce human casualties during natural disasters.
Chief guest on the day, Minister of Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management, Government of Sikkim, Bhim Dhungel, in his address, highlighted the various initiatives introduced by the Government of Sikkim for the conservation of biodiversity and to study the impacts of climate change.
The release informs that the seminar was attended by over 100 participants comprising of scientists, research scholars from various organizations like ICIMOD, GBPIHED, WWF, ECOSS, Spices Board, faculties from Sikkim University and Government Colleges in Sikkim and officials of the Government of Sikkim. The seminar was funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and Sikkim University.
Scientific deliberations were witnessed in two technical sessions with nine presentations. The two-tier technical sessions were followed by an open discussion chaired by Principal Research Officer (Forest), Government of Sikkim, Usha Lachungpa, where various suggestion and recommendations were made by the house.
The house emphasized the need for more collaborative research work with different institutes like, NEHU, NBU, ICIMOD, ATTREE, WWF, ECOSS, DST, DBT, MOEF and other institutions working in and around Sikkim,  to cope up with climate change and for the scientific development in this part of the region.  The seminar concluded with the closing remarks by Dr. Dhaniraj Chhetri, Associate Professor, Sikkim University.
VC, Sikkim University and guest speakers appreciated the initiatives taken by the newly established Department of Zoology for organizing the seminar on one of the burning issues of the current world, the release adds.
