PELLING, 12 Nov: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling inaugurated The Chumbi Mountain Resort & Spa, here in Naku Chumbong, Pelling, West Sikkim, today.  The 5-Star resort is a first for Pelling, and its impressive scale and tasteful design sets a new benchmark for such projects in the region.
The resort has been developed on a property flanked by the Sidkeong Tulku Bird Sanctuary and crowned by the Pemayangtse Monastery estate. The main building houses the lobby, restaurants and 12 rooms on different levels.
Featuring every possible contemporary convenience blended into a traditional ambience, the resort ensures that guests get a feel of Sikkimese culture and tradition in the comfort of a lush, luxurious five star setting.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister congratulated proprietor and Managing Director of the resort, noted filmmaker Ugen Chopel, for his innovative idea of crafting such a luxurious hotel here in Pelling.
The resort will attract more tourists to West Sikkim as well as help promote Sikkim tourism further, the CM commended.
“A large number of people are venturing into the tourism sector nowadays, which is good. Sikkim has received the national award in various sectors including tourism and has become a model in the country”, said the CM.
He also mentioned that the greenfield airport at Pakyong will be operational by next year and further urged all stakeholders and the civil society to come forward as partners in developing tourism to new levels in the state.
Earlier, the Chief Minister was felicitated by The Chumbi Group of Hotels for leading Sikkim towards achieving global recognition. The Group’s MD, Mr Chopel presented the citation to the Chief Minister.
In his welcome address, Mr. Chopel spoke about the struggles of his team to construct the resort in four and a half years. “This resort is a labour of our love and as tourism stakeholders, we are committed to play a proactive role in the growth of Sikkim Tourism”, he said.
“The Chumbi Mountain Resort, spread over 3 acres of land, offers a breathtaking view of Khangchendzonga range and is set up in a natural environment that offers hospitality in tranquility. The design is a marriage between the best in modern facilities and amenities combined with traditional trappings, a blend of Sikkimese architectural design with the Bhutanese module of exclusivity”, Mr Chopel added.
The opening ceremony saw students of Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Gangyap, presenting an abridged version of its successful musical play ‘Across The Universe’. Popular Nepali singers Adrian Pradhan and Nima Rumba also performed.
