Chetna: A Rotary drive to ensure Mothers’ Safety

GANGTOK, 08 Nov: Inner Wheel Club of Gangtok in collaboration with Rotary Club of Gangtok embarked on a project called ‘CHETNA’.
A press release informs that through this programme, the skills of handling emergencies during childbirth and labour will be taught to various technical personnel like nurses, ASHAs, Doctors and paramedical and medical students of various government and private establishments of Sikkim
The first of the programmes was inaugurated by District Chairman, Jayanti Dutta at the nursing school of STNM Hospital on 07 November.
The vision is to take the programme to every possible health related establishment like PHCs, hospitals, colleges, etc. in the coming year and train technical personnel to handle emergencies during delivery with limited equipments and resources. The main aim of the programme is to reduce maternal mortality rate, the release informs.
Along with these, training sessions in various places, parallel programmes relating to mental health, prevention of suicides, sanitation, hygiene, de-addiction, general health check up camps, will also be carried out by the clubs.
The programme was conceptualized following the Rotary Club of Gangtok’s initiative of inviting vocational training teams to the state. A team of seven eminent obstetricians from UK had come to Sikkim six months ago and trained 13 doctors from various parts of Sikkim. These master trainers are now propagating the training to other medics and paramedics till it reaches the grass root level, the release mentions.
