Sikkim chess players return with improved FIDE ratings

GANGTOK, 28 Oct: Players of Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] have improved their FIDE ratings at the 51st edition of National Challenger Chess Tournament 2013 held at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh from 12 to 22 October.
A four-member SCA team accompanied by the SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, who also served the tournament as an international arbiter, had participated in the tournament. All four players were able to achieve an improvement in their ratings at the tournament.
With the improvement of 38 ratings in this tournament, Rakesh Gurung’s rating has gone up to 1884 from 1846, while Thendup Tamang went up 22 points and is now on 1760 from 1738.
Likewise, going up 25 points, Sushmita Lama’s FIDE rating is now 1584 and Rahul Gurung was also able to improve by 33 points in the tournament and his present rating is 1617 from the earlier 1584.
Speaking to media persons today, Mr Dhakal stated that the team had gone in this prestigious tournament with the main objective to improve rating of the state players. “The team has been very successful in this respect. One of the highlights at the tournament was Sikkim’s Rakesh Gurung defeating a FIDE Master player from Odisha”, he added.
