Major ‘drug’ bust by South cops

NAMCHI, 03 June: A huge cache of contraband substances – a haul of 30,660 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon and 440 bottles of Recodex cough syrup, both much-abused prescription drugs – was seized by South District police on Saturday.
Acting on source information, a police team led by SHO Temi Police Station, SI Karma Tshering Bhutia, I/C Bermoik Outpost ASI KB Gurung, Naik Dawa Zangpo, Constable Karma Bhutia along with other police officials seized the drugs after a raid conducted at Dalep Fatak near Sirwani Bridge in South Sikkim on Saturday at around 5:15 pm.
In a meticulously conducted operation, these drugs were intercepted and recovered from a vehicle [a Maruti Van SK-03P/0412] coming in from Siliguri. The vehicle, police sources contend, was primarily hired to smuggle the drugs into Sikkim.
Four persons, including the driver, one Deepak Subba, the husband-wife duo of Rajen Pradhan and Indra Pradhan and another Sumitra Bhutia have been arrested and booked under Section 9/14 of the Sikkim Anti Drugs Act, 2006.
The four accused have been put under 5 days of police custody.
Considering the recent haul of similar drugs at Adarsh Gaon, South Sikkim, police had been keeping a close watch on drugs-related history-sheeters in the area. Among the four arrested, accused Rajen Pradhan works as a supervisor on Muster Roll with the Public Works Department, and had also rented a room at Dalep basti for this very purpose, it is believed.
The drugs were allegedly to be sold in towns like Singtam, Ravangla, Temi and Namchi.
The police are also investigating into the prospective buyers here in Sikkim and the supply areas of Siliguri. It maybe recalled that under the initiative of SP South a huge amount of drugs were disposed here at Namchi Police Station last week wherein a similar amount of drugs seized in 67 cases from 2008-2011 of the entire South District were disposed.
