VC refutes allegations of irregularities in SU recruitment process

GANGTOK, 28 Feb: Sikkim University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, while responding to allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process underway at the University [read, “Faculty allege irregularities in SU recruitment process”, NOW! issue dated 28 Feb 2011], countered today that the best selection boards have been constituted for the selection process. He stated that protest “is expected” since the selection process was tough and competitive, adding, “We only wish that these colleagues of ours had raised these baseless issues before the selection process started and before they were not selected by the selection board.”
A section of the faculty members at the SU yesterday petitioned the Executive Council of the University levelling several allegations against the VC and the manner in which the recruitment process has been managed. They have contended that the selection committees need to include nominees of the Executive Council, but since the interviews were held in the interim between the First and Second ECs, the entire panel was constituted by the VC himself. This exercise of “emergency powers” [when the VC acts on behalf of statutory bodies] is explicitly disallowed by the Ministry of HRD, the protesting faculty members contend.
Responding to the allegations, the VC said, “We have read the contents of the note. The second EC which is the highest decision making body of the University had its first meeting on 22nd Feb 2012 and approved all the appointments (including many other issues in the agenda) and in fact highly appreciated the consistent efforts put up by the faculty members and management team for making all the appointments process transparent and bringing the best available faculty members to this new University.”
He reiterated that best selections boards were constituted to “carry out these exercises effectively and efficiently”.

  1. An astute politician in the garb of an academician.....no one can beat Prof Lama at these wriggly piddly games!!! He is too sharp for the likes of Prasads and his gang of dissenters!!! Altho from the hills, he is no "lata" pahari and thinks more like a "tam bram", bihari and marwari rolled into one!!!!

  2. A Tam Bram is a Tamil Brahmin, its a caste thing, ascribed to their wily nature.

Bihari, for all your knowledge is not a caste, it is as artificial as being Sikkimese or Indian.

While marwari's maybe great thinkers among the 'lata' pahari's, caste wise, they are not ascribed with great mind, beyond the making of money.

When someone is powerful, it is always difficult to imagine, that they can be beaten.

Can Bimal Gurung be beaten? Can CM Chamling be beaten?

Did you ever think, Bhandari would be beaten or Ghising and they were, right?

    So keep watching.

    1. The following adjectives are ascribed to describer a person who sharp and will play any one willy nilly for his own gains, lets not get into the didactics of the words!!! what diff will it make to Lama??? he has his ppl in place as he wanted, in the admin, by starting non consequential departments like music and the like. The admin is filled with people not Sikkimese, where as the Sikkimese wishes that it is them who get the first chance since the institution has come in here and as done every where its the locals who are given preference!! Yes and everyone is watching....with the mainland itself swamped in corruption, lets wait and watch if any reactions and action come from there!!1

  3. It is of great importance here to realise that VC is too witty to be caught & Sikkiemese people is too stupid that is what he is suggesting by using diplomatic words like "there was too much of competition" meaning people of Sikkim are educated fools.

By stating "in fact highly appreciated the consistent efforts put up by the faculty members and management team for making all the appointments process transparent and bringing the best available faculty members to this new University.” HE MEANS that he is highly obliged that all the faculty (80% of people in power being not Sikkimese) members did what he said.

selections boards were constituted to “carry out these exercises effectively and efficiently” MEANING i have already bought the selection board to carry out appointments effectively and efficiently as i SAY...

Sikkemese people may be stupid but not so stupid that we dont understand those diplomatic words...

    1. That's been the vc's constant line, one wuld agree, Sikkim doesnt have as many Phds to fill up all the departments floated by him, esp deptts like music and what not....but one wud expect a fair share in the areas where we have ample no of people!!! what need is there to have assistants from outside, doesnt sikkim have able ppl from within the state, the education scenerio couldn't be so dismal here!!

  4. when did this argument turn into a sikkimese/non-sikkimese one and why? you are either qualified or not qualified....capable or incapable...if the issue is about unfair recruitment procedures then the sikkimese/non-sikkimese thing turns the whole argument against itself.Doesnt preference for the Sikkimese make the recruitment process unfair all the more? The dissatisfied/ disgruntled teachers, lecturers shouldve raised the issue before they heard that they were not selected [sob] and yes Prof Lama is playing games... n there is nothing to watch for as nothing...absolutely nothing is going to come out of this. Lama will leave in a few months...the disgruntled teachers will find new jobs elsewhere...while the students here who might ve genuinely hoped to learn from some good teachers that they lost will have to make do with Lama's leftovers....the end.

    1. Yes, u've hit the nail on the head!!! The crux is either u are capable or incapable. How can one assume that just coz u've been on contract means u'll be absorbed when the permanent appointments take place. The unselected ones were found wanting in their capabilities i assume, so didn't get selected, and now to go to press accusing the VC of misdoings in the garb of freedom from hitler of SU is wrong and shows them as more opportunists than even Lama, they've been arond a lonng time to know that some wrong doing was going on, if not while they were immersed in their work , but when they got the call letters, if as they say it is wrong to hold interviews outside the state, then they shold have gone and got a stay from the Courts!!! and if u pick any issue any where within the state then it will always boil down to Sikkimese and non Sikkimese!!and why should it not??? How will giving more opportunity to well deserving Sikkimese make it an unfair process!!!

    2. because if they are 'well deserving' then there should be no need to 'provide' them with opportunities. It is the students who deserve good teachers regardless of whether they are Sikkimese or non Sikkimese and it becomes 'unfair' to them.

    3. It is also an arguemnt about Sikkimese & non Sikkimese though the base is either you are competent or you are not but pointing to the fact that there are only two possibilities i.e. i) either Sikkimese people are so stupid that they can't compete for recruitment or ii) Sikkimese people are not so stupid yet they dont get recruited because of Lama being nepotist and favourable to his candidates ... So the first point being hard to swallow, we are left with second option. While talking about students then around 70% students are non Sikkimese & it is of utmost importance to realise the main vision for building University of Sikkim was to benefit the students of Sikkim primarily e.g, by making Tadong Govt College under SU instead of NBU where students of Sikkim has faced a lot of troubles under NBU's bias paper correction.
While the base of institution seems falling down due to M P Lama's irresponsibility it is likely that students will fall apart as well. Atlast it is to realise that the primary reason to build SU was for the students of Sikkim and then yes for everyone so the argument stands Sikkimese & non Sikkimese.

    4. I would so agree with the second assumption that u have propounded!! if u have been following the SU news and murmuring from the beginning of time then one would assume this only. The point to wonder and if u look thru the website u will find ppl other than Sikkimese for lower admin posts also....are our ppl not capable...i dont agree...our children are as competent as any other...so this only harps back to the nepotism theory, which could not have come up on a lark...there cant be smoke with out fire!!! I also wonder at the no of deptt with just two to three students admitted. what is the logic behind..and if u go look at the teachers profiles for these subs u'll find your own answers!!!!

    5. The argument of Sikkimese and non Sikkimese also becomes important while highlighting one fact i.e. the clash b/w VC & CM for the same reason. The CM would not so easily provide land for SU while he being in the designation of VC fearing the unpredictable future of Sikkim on the hands of current VC Mr. Lama & VC would not like to rule the University with mutiple buildings in various places as a University. While CM tends to benefit the people of Sikkim first, VC tends to bring his men first and then make an international University, it is a very thin line to realise that Mr. CM wants to do good while the VC to some extent wants the same thing but on the cost that is not acceptable. So we finally pin down to VC's irresponsibility that has cost such a major drawback to the future of the University.

    6. Really....and with such inane as subjects like music, Tea Management, D, Computer Science,Earth Science, Ethno-Botany, one can only see where it leads to...!!! instead of going on starting new programmes, he should have gone about consolidating what had been started!! Does he even know what's happeneng in the class rooms!! who takes how many hours and the like!! wonder if the next incumbent will be able to sustain it and carry it forward!!!
