North students make World Disability Day special


MANGAN, 04 Dec: The District Project Office, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, HRDD/ North, observed World Disability Day at Singhik Secondary School on 03 Dec with the the District Magistrate, North, TN Kazi as the chief guest.

The day was marked by the staging of a play by the students of Singhik School on the theme ‘Shiksha ka Haq Abhiyan’. A painting competition was held among the students of Inclusive Education, Singhik SS and North Sikkim Academy, wherein CWSN students from Passingdang Block bagged the first prize, followed by Singhik SS and North Sikkim Academy. The program also delved on the RTE Act and Inclusive Education for Children with Special Needs.
Earlier, the day began with the address of the Joint Director, HRDD/N to the teachers and students of Singhik SS, Inclusive Education students and the officials of the SSA and HRDD/N. A rally was then taken out around the area, participated in by the staff of Singhik SS, students, Inclusive Education students and the District officials.
Joint Director cum Project Head, SSA/HRDD/N, SD Bhutia, in his address highlighted the importance of Inclusive Education and various Governmental schemes under it. He also urged the people to come forward, get involved and spread the necessary information to ensure proper planning.
The chief guest, the DM North, in his address, shared various examples of international personalities with disabilities who have excelled in the fields of sports, academics and other sectors and who have set an example for the rest of the world.
The observance of the Day aims at promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, he informed.
It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life, he added.
The DM stressed that these are not possible until and unless people are made more aware and unless the differently-abled can move freely without any hindrance, either by way of physical infrastructure or because of social mindsets.
Later, Bishnu Maya Subba, a 7-year old CWSN student from Passingdang Secondary School was awarded the Best Performing Student under CWSN for the year 2011.
The day ended with the vote of thanks by Resource Person, SSA/N, Kunga Tashi Bhutia.
