BJP alleges irregularities in earthquake relief distribution

GANGTOK, 22 Nov: Bharatiya Janta Party, Sikkim unit, has demanded that the Centre investigate the process of relief distribution by the State government in the wake of the 18 September earthquake. The party has alleged irregularities in relief distribution here.
Addressing a press conference today, the state-unit general secretary, Padam Sharma, condemned the process by which the Chief Minister distributed immediate relief in cash. He alleged that there was irregularity in the relief distribution and many have not received relief as yet.
On the same, Mr Sharma stated that relief distribution should be done through cheques and the CM himself should be held responsible and accountable with regard to the distribution of relief in cash by him in the aftermath of the quake
He further informed that with regard to all these issues the state-unit of the party has already submitted a memorandum to the Parliamentary Committee of the party headed by Nikhil Chaudhary, who will further submit it to the Parliamentary Committee of the Centre.
The party has also placed a demand to the Centre to constitute a committee to monitor the use of funds for earthquake relief coming from the Centre. Mentioning that almost all houses located above tunnels in hydro project areas have sustained severe damage, he said that the party has asked the State government to relocate and rehabilitate such affected families.
Mr Sharma further demanded that notices should be sent to the 14,000 damaged houses that the government had earlier announced would be completely reconstructed since there is some confusion on which houses fall under this list.
