PNGS resolves to tide over earthquake setback

GANGTOK, 19 Oct: Schools across the state have suffered damage due to the 18 Sept earthquake and the Paljor Namgyal Girls Senior Secondary School in the capital was not spared either. The Science block and Principal’s quarters have sustained major damages and have since been vacated.
Chemistry, Physics, and Biology experiments are being conducted in a common lab since the science labs are not safe for functioning. The primary section has also suffered some damage due to which in some cases different sections of a class are all being taught in a common classroom. A grant of Rs 8 lakh has been requested from the State government for repairs at the school.
While speaking to NOW!, Principal, Jem Pandi Targain said that, “All the teachers and staff worked together in relocating the class rooms. Almost all the teachers extended their voluntary help during the holidays. The spirit of the teachers was very positive”.
“We are one week behind but will manage by conducting extra classes and Class 10 and 12 will work through the winter holidays as well,” she added.
The Principal further expressed that the damages in the Science building, which is the heart of the school, has deeply affected all and repair and reconstruction will start as soon as funds for the same are released by the government.
School and hostel captain, Tenzing Choying Bhutia said, “The scene was horrifying. It was dark and one window pane fell and broke. Everyone was shocked and came out crying. Almost 150 of us were in the hostel at the time and we all stood by each other.”
“In the face of such a natural calamity we should all cope with our studies and not lose track,” she further added.
