Yuksam Secondary School celebrates ‘Spirit of August of India’

GANGTOK, 03 Aug: ‘Spirit of August of India’, a fortnight long celebration commemorating the 155th anniversary of the end of East India Company rule in India following the Sepoy Mutiny – the first war for Independence - of 1857, began at the Yuksam Secondary School yesterday. Hosted at Yuksam SS in West Sikkim, with participation from all the feeder-cum-private schools under Yuksam-Dubdi GPU, the celebration was flagged off by West Zilla Adhakshya, Karma Choki Bhutia, and Budha Hang Subba, ex-Zilla Upadhakshya, both of whom are alumni of Yuksam Secondary School.

The inaugural day also included the dedication of the first-ever Sustainable School Sanitation System in Sikkim, developed from funds raised by ODAC (Outdoor Activity Corner) Team of Victoria Junior College of Singapore in the International Year of Sanitation 2008 and with technology from World Toilet Organization (Singapore). Yuksam-Gerethang ZPU-level Panchayat Yuva-Krida Khel Abhiyan [PYKKA] competitions were also been flagged off on the occasion, informs a press release issued by the Headmaster, Sanjoy Acharya.
A ‘Heritage of India’ quiz competition for primary school students organized on the day received huge response from the schools of the Yuksam-Dubdi GPU so much so that 8 out of the 9 schools in the GPU participated in the event. The liveliness of the Quizmasters- Sonam Tashi Bhutia and Rinchen Ongmu Bhutia (ad-hoc teachers at Yuksam School) and the enthusiasm of the participating teams were very encouraging, the Headmaster conveys.
The host school won the competition with Life Vision Academy coming second.
The invited alumni of the School – Mrs. Karma Choki Bhutia and Mr. Budha Hang Limboo – were felicitated and awarded with tokens representing the theme of ‘Struggle & Success’ by the Yuksam School family. Economy and Deluxe editions of T-Shirts designed by the Red Ribbon Club of the School promoting the cause of Blood Donation and World Peace were also released by the guests on the day.
On behalf of the SMDC-cum-Ad-hoc Celebration Committee of the ‘Celebration of the Spirit of August of India’ constituted under the patronage of former Minister, Mohan Gurung, the Headmaster informed the gathering about one-of-its-kind observance of the spirit and fervor of Independence Day within the regular framework of the School activities. He informed that the fortnight long package will include a film festival, slogan & placard writing and painting competitions on various themes, a marathon and rallies for world peace, conservation of natural and cultural heritage and life-skill issues.
 Yuksam-Dubdi GPU-level Vegetable and Fruit Show, Flower Show, Healthy Mother – Healthy Child Show, Couple Hunt–cum–Show on Traditional Costume will also be accommodated in the package to generate awareness on what the school introduces as the “Chief Minister’s Vision of Brand Sikkim – Organic, Healthy and multi-cultural Sikkim”.
The inaugural day also included two ward-level Under-16 Boys football matches under the PYKKA programme –between Tingtingaon and Toping wards and the between the Khyongter & Tsong Dubdi wards. While Tintgtingaon won the first match 2 – 1, Khogtey won the other match 5-2.
