Upreti sympathises with Bhandari on imprisonment, condemns statements against party

GANGTOK, 11 Aug: Senior vice-president, Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee [SPCC], KN Upreti, convened a meeting today at his residence in Tadong to discuss the imprisonment of the SPCC president Nar Bahadur Bhandari on corruption charges and statements ascribed to him in media-reports.
A press release issued by Mr. Upreti informs that the meeting was also attended by SPCC vice-president, Phuchung Bhutia, Laxuman Gurung, PCC and general secretary [Legal Cell], Arun Rai, general secretary, Nima Wangchuk and others.

The meeting, “while feeling sorry for the conviction of the President, SPCC and former Chief Minister, Nar Bahadur Bhandari in a case of corruption and misuse of power during his first tenure as Chief Minister, expressed its sympathy considering Mr Bhandari’s old age and long legal battle he had to fight before the said conviction”, the release states.
However, the meeting also recorded shock over Mr. Bhandari’s “uncalled for remarks” blaming the UPA government and the Congress party for his “misfortune”. The meeting “strongly condemned” the statement, arguing that neither the Centre nor the State Congress party has any role to play in his conviction by a court of law.
“There are hundreds of such Congress stalwarts like Mr Bhandari who are facing CBI cases in the country and the party could do nothing for them,” the release mentions.
The Congress members have sought a clarification from the party’s official spokesperson [on behalf of Mr. Bhandari] on “whether the statement of abuse against the Congress led UPA Govt at the centre and his ‘resolve to teach Congress a lesson’ [as he was quoted in some media reports] is an expression of frustration or intentional”.
