Monday night rain runs Namchi dry, floods rumours as well

NAMCHI, 09 June: The heavy downpour of 06 June caused a number of landslides at different places under Ravangla sub division which, apart from spreading some worry, also damaged the water supply pipelines leading towards Namchi from Barmeli near Ravangla.
Water supply in Namchi was finally restored yesterday after three days by a team from the PHE Deptt, South District, and taps started flowing again by evening. The public of Namchi were however, gripped by rumours of that water supply would remain suspended for another two days which led to people rushing to tank up from the nearest water sources in their private vehicles. By evening, people had even started hiring taxis to ferry water to their homes.

Ravangla also suffered from rumours, these suggesting that the Rangeet was blocked by a slide endangering the adjoining villages. To ascertain facts, the Barfung MLA, Sonam Gyatso Bhutia, along with SDM PK Rai and his team visited the spot and found out that there was no such threat.
The Ravangla SDM, while speaking to this correspondent over the phone, said that when the team arrived at the spot, it was found that debris from Cheel Khola below Ralong had slushed into the Rangeet blocking it for a while, but before the team reached there, this blockage had been swept away, hence posing no such threat or danger to downstream areas.
He further informed that heavy rainfall on the night of 06 June had caused some minor landslides in the area where two houses near Ralong Monastery suffered minor damages. Near the new monastery at Ralong, two houses which had monks in residence suffered minor damages but no one was injured, he informed.
