Fire destroys restaurant in Bojoghari

GANGTOK, 06 June: A fire destroyed the interiors of a restaurant here at Bojoghari belonging to one Suk Maya Subba on Sunday. However, brave intervention by a resident of Penlong and the neigbours brought the fire under control in time and stopped it from spreading to nearby houses, it is informed.
The fire, it is informed, was caused by a leaking LPG cylinder and was so sudden that it caught Suk Maya Subba by surprise and she ran out of the restaurant in panic.
Karma Tenkyong of Penlong, who was passing by at the time, responded spontaneously and grabbing  a fire extinguisher from a nearby shop, rushed into the restaurant and with the help of the neighbours dragged the leaking cylinder out of the restaurant.

This brave act averted what could have become a major disaster.
A team from the Gangtok Fire Station also arrived at the spot and fought down the blaze and cooled down the cylinder as well.
Unfortunately, Ms Subba has lost all her belongings in the restaurant by the time the fire was brought under control.
The Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Gangtok Fire Station, Prakash Rai, attested that Mr Tenkyong and the neighbours displayed remarkable presence of mind and bravery by taking out the cylinder from the restaurant before a worse calamity occurred. He also appreciated the works carried out by Sadar Thana personnel on duty in the operation.
The DCFO requested the people not to be careless with LPG cylinders and ensure regular maintenance to avoid such incidents.
He also informed that the Gangtok Fire Station has been carrying out awareness programmes in the schools and shared that these campaigns have proved useful as this incident bears out.
