Domestic abuse ends in murder

33 YEAR OLD HACKS WIFE TO DEATH, FLEES, LEAVING THREE CHILDREN BEHIND
NAMCHI, 10 June: In a tragic incident in West Sikkim a mother of three was brutally murdered by her husband last evening. The incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. at Gerethang Tinziring basti which falls under Tashiding-Yuksom constituency, when the accused, 33-year-old, Ram Bdr. Basnet, hacked his 31-year-old wife, Tara Kri. Basnet, and fled from the spot while she bled to death.
It is learnt, that the couple had been having problems in their marriage for the past few years with a history of domestic violence. The husband used to regularly abuse his wife which had even led to separation and an FIR filed against him by the victim’s relatives about a month ago.

However, the father of the accused requested the victim’s parents not to take her away and asked his own son to leave the house instead. On 08 June, the accused, assuring his parents that he had reformed and would not subject his wife to domestic abuse any more, took his wife and children away with him.
The accused, however, once again started quarrelling with his wife, his abuse culminating in the murder last evening.
A disturbing element in this tragic incident is the fact that it was one of the children who discovered their own mother’s body lying on the floor with blood splattered all over the room. Screaming and crying the children informed the neighbours who then informed the police.
The police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy at Gyalshing Hospital today. The Police has registered the case under Section 302 of IPC at Gyalshing PS and investigation has begun. The accused remains absconding.
Upon hearing of this incident, the Chief Minister, who is on tour in the constituency, announced that he would sponsor the education of the three children, who have now been left practically orphaned parents.
