Preparations begin for Baisakhi Utsav


GANGTOK: The Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Sikkim, in a meeting held on 14 March at its headquarters here, decided to celebrate Baisakhi Utsav 2011 in grand manner this year on 14 and 15 April.
The meeting, chaired by IPR Minister CB Karki, constituted a Baisakhi Utsav committee comprising of Ministers Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, NK Pradhan, MLA Dorjee Namgyal Bhutia, Gangtok Mayor, KN Topgay, Deputy Mayor, Shakti Singh, T Lachungpa, DK Khati and DB Thatal as advisors.

The meeting attended by Parishad’s executive members and other dignitaries unanimously nominated Mr. Karki as the president of the committee followed by Ugen T. Gyatso, Government’s Chief Whip, BK Roka, Parishad’s president, DR Kharel, Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department Secretary, NR Bhattrai, Chief Engineer, Energy & Power Department as vice-presidents.
Similarly, Jagdish Sharma was appointed general secretary whereas Biru Bangdel, Ganesh Chandra Khanal, GT Lepcha and GM Gurung will hold the post of joint secretaries. The meeting further nominated TP Koirala and Kuldip Chettri as treasurer and joint treasurer respectively.
Besides, various other sub-committees were also formed and members for the same were also nominated, informs a press release issued by Hemant Giri, publicity secretary of the organization.
Addressing the gathering, Parishad’s cultural secretary, Biru Bangdel announced that the celebration will be a two-day affair probably on 14 & 15 April next month and urged the organizing committee to plan properly to ensure that the celebration be made grand than the one of last year.
Speaking from the chair, Mr. Karki said that Baisakhi Utsav hold significance for all communities and urged everyone to participate to make the event successful. He also requested the organizing committee to handle their responsibilities whole heartedly, the release said.
