Hoteliers and restaurateurs propose ban on honking
Sikkim Hotel and Restaurant Association [SHRA] has proposed that the state government initiate measures and set rules to minimize vehicular honking within the capital as well as come up with a long term plan to educate citizens on the nuisance created by unnecessary honking.
In a press release, SHRA president, Pema Lamtha informs that they have met the concerned officials and also written to Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation department, DGP, Sikkim Police, Secretary, Transport Department and the DSP, East District Police on the matter. The proposal mentions that many tourists lodged in hotels in and around Gangtok have been complaining about the disturbance caused by vehicles honking. The association urges the government to introduce such measures on 27 September on the occasion of World Tourism Day. The Tourism department has agreed to put this proposal in the World Tourism Day, 2015 celebration agenda, the release mentions.
"We could be the first state capital of India to do so and we are sure that it would be beneficial to all our combined efforts to improve tourism and quality of life in Sikkim", the release states.
Not only honkings but the unnecessary running of engine of trucks in the night and early morning by the drivers should also be banned and the areas falling under municipality areas should be made free from parking of trucks on the roadsides.
