The Affected Citizens of Teesta (ACT), Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee and Sangha MLA, Sonam Lama have welcomed the decision of the people of Dzongu led by the Deputy Speaker cum area MLA, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha to oppose all forms of Hydro Electric Power Projects in the area.
It is informed that this decision was made during a brainstorming and coordination session held on 10 May at Hee Gyathang in Lower Dzongu which was attended by the area MLA, Mr Lepcha, panchayats and government employees.
In a press release ACT working president, Tseten Lepcha has said, “This historic unanimous decision will go a long way in bringing Unity and Peace, which will usher in lasting prosperity more than what the mostly failed and destructive Hydro projects can provide”.
The ACT has further acknowledged the contribution of the Area MLA and the Panchayats in boycotting the Public Hearing of the Teesta HEP stage IV. The stand is one of the most important rallying points in the litigation in National Green Tribunal (NGT) where the members of ACT have challenged the Environmental Clearance granted to NHPC to Develop Teesta HEP Stage IV.
The organisation has further thanked all persons employed with the state government particularly; Anguli Lepcha [Zilla Adhayshya(N)], Pintso Lepcha [Chairman SNT], Sonam Lepcha [JD,HRDD (N)], Panchayat President Hee Gyathang GPU.
Also welcoming this decision, Sangha MLA, Sonam Lama has questioned the Chief Minister’s comment during a function held at Chintan Bhawan on Friday. According to Mr Lama, the CM mentioned that the power project at Rathongchu River in West Sikkim has been closed down. Stating that the 97 MW Tashiding Hydro Electric Project is going on at war footing over the sacred Rathongchu River in West Sikkim, he has asked the CM which project he was referring to in his address on Friday.
SIBLAC, convenor Tseten Tashi Bhutia has said, “The unanimous decision taken by the Hon’ble Area MLA and people of Dzongu is an exemplary community act that deserves appreciation”. He has further sought the early intervention of the government to immediately scrap the Hydro projects in North Sikkim as well as West Sikkim.
