Sports wins South Sikkim Inter-Departmental Football tourney

NAMCHI, 06 Aug [IPR]: The finals of the Inter Departmental League Football Tournament organized by the South District Government Drivers' Association (SDGDA) was held in Veterinary Play Ground, Namchi today. The Sports and Youth Affairs department went on to win the tournament defeating the team from Rural Management & Development Department (RMDD) by a score of 2-nil.
Advisor to the PHE Department, Binod Rai was present on the occasion as the chief guest. Also present were Zilla Adhakshya (South), CL Gurung; ADM (South), Kapil Meena; SDM (HQ), Samdup Bhutia; ADC (Dev), Benu Gurung alongside the officials and nodal heads of various Government departments and public of Namchi and adjoining areas.
The play-offs which commenced on 21 July had 12 teams from different departments namely DAC/Land Revenue, UD & HD, Roads & Bridges, Buildings & Housing, Forests, Power, PHE, Agriculture & Horticulture, HRDD, Health, RMDD and Sports and Youth Affairs.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Mr. Rai commended the organizing committee for organizing sporting events of such magnitude which inspires and triggers friendly atmosphere between various government departments. Such events are not just a source of entertainment but also an ideal medium to remain fit and healthy, he added.
Mr. Rai urged the old and the young alike to take keen interest in sports as it brings about positive change in their lives.
The Man of the Match title was conferred upon Diwakar Rai from RMDD team while the Best Disciplined team went to Agriculture & Horticulture. The runners-up trophy and the winner’s trophy along with cash prize were handed over at the end of the tournament by the chief guest.
