GANGTOK, 01 Aug: Dr. Anil Mainra, PCCF cum Secretary, Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, accompanied by Dr. Gopal Pradhan Principal Scientist-SPCB, Nambi Bhutia DFO (T) East, Devendra Chettri DFO EPC, James Lepcha ACF (T) East, ACF EPC, ROs, BOs and the field staff carried out a surprise visit of JN Botanical Garden at Rumtek, Glenmark Pharmaceutical Unit at Tumlabung Marchak and the Solid Waste Disposal Yard at Martam on 29 July, an official press release informs.
At the JN Botanical Garden, the Secretary directed the DFO EPC to prepare a comprehensive proposal in consultation with Dr. Gopal Pradhan for the up gradation of the garden.
The PCCF, who is also the SPCB Member Secretary, also conducted a thorough study of the process of manufacturing and held interaction with the workers at the Glenmark Pharmaceutical Unit.
During his meeting with the management later, he urged adherence to pollution control norms and further requested them to address the grievances of the workers with a humane approach, the release states.
He directed the SPCB officials to organize a workshop for all major industrial units so that proper pollution norms could be observed.
The team also visited the Solid Waste Disposal Yard at Martam where a meeting with the UD&HD and GMC was convened in order to find an immediate and sustainable solution to the problem. The Secretary also interacted with the people working in the dumping yard and offered suggestions for keeping them safe from the hazards by wearing adequate safety gear.
