Taxi stands and traffic cops resolve issues

GANGTOK, 20 July: A joint meeting between representatives of various local taxi drivers associations, Sikkim traffic police and social organizations was held here in the capital on Saturday to discuss issues related to the different local taxi stands, syndicates and stoppage points in-and-around the capital.
The meeting, as per the SDPO, Traffic, DSP Ongmu Bhutia, has resolved that all the existing stands, stands and traffic points would function as earlier and no changes will be made by the administration on the same.
The SDPO informs that the local traffic would be managed as was being done earlier from the same taxi stands, stoppage and pick-up points. The issue with the local taxi drivers associations has been resolved amicably, she stated.
“The traffic police had removed the existing syndicates for one day as there were many applications from new applicants that needed to be entertained. In the meeting, it was decided that the new applicants will be accommodated in the existing syndicates by the local taxi drivers associations. This was one of the major problems because of which it was required for all to sit, discuss and resolve the issue of the large number of new applicants that the traffic police was receiving for the past many months,” stated the SDPO today.
She also informed that the respective local taxi driver associations have agreed to repair all the traffic points in their areas which have been damaged in the recent spate of vandalism.
The SDPO added that since the problem of the new applicants being included in the existing stands was resolved, the traffic police had amicably decided to restore all existing traffic syndicates and points as they were before 16 July.
“The local taxi drivers associations have agreed to provide all cooperation to the administration and have also started with the repairs of the vandalized traffic points. Today the traffic point at Zero Point has also been repaired by the respective associations. The meeting decided that since the problem had been solved the existing rules would be maintained,” said the SDPO.
