NAMCHI, 23 July: Students from Namthang-Rateypani constituency of South Sikkim enrolled at Namchi Government College and different schools under the constituency today registered their dissatisfaction with the State Government’s decision to keep schools closed till 31 July. Almost the entire month has been lost to holidays now with the summer break earlier in the month and then the college protests leading to shutdown of schools and colleges since 15 July. Although the ‘trouble’ was limited to Gangtok, government schools and colleges all over the State have been closed.
Students called a press conference at Namthang today and appealed to the State government to solve the issue at the earliest so that they could resume their studies and return to their classes.
The students also condemned the police action on college students in Gangtok and hoped that the enquiry committee will deliver justice to the aggrieved students.
The students also reiterated that they condemned violence in all forms and stressed that the only priority for them was learning, a process which has been hamstrung by the closure of schools.
They also conveyed their gratitude towards the Chief Minister for having made education completely free till graduation in Sikkim.
Further, the students also appealed to all political parties of the state not to interfere and politicize the issue as such interference will only complicate the matter further and make delivery justice even more difficult. In the same vein, they also appealed to other students not to resort to violence or allow themselves to get instigated.
