Dikchu youth organize art competition to mark Day Against Drug Abuse

MANGAN, 14 July: Dikchu Youth Welfare Association [DYWA], in collaboration with the Sikkim State AIDS Control Society [SSACS], organized a daylong function to raise awareness on the problem of substance abuse here as part of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The awareness function, organized at Dikchu Bazar in East Sikkim, was attended by local residents, students of different schools and people from all walks of life.
As part of the events for the day, a sit & draw art competition was organized among students. Around 50 students from Dikchu Senior Secondary School and Springdale School took part.
The Day, observed on 26 June, was postponed to today due to a death in the family of one of the association’s members, the organizer explained.
The function had Mangan Nagar Panchayat councilor, Pappu Kumar Malu, as chief guest accompanied by Panchayat President, Rakdong-Tintek GPU as special guest.
Delivering the welcome address, the DYWA general secretary Chung Chung Tongden Lepcha highlighted the importance of the function and detailed the different social activities undertaken by DYWA. Besides, the function also included counseling session on the ill effects of drugs and alcoholism by Amrit Oberoi, counselor, Serenity Home-Gangtok, who was present as a resource person.
Similarly, the Panchayat President, Rakdong-Tintek GPU, BB Gurung, welcomed the initiative taken by DYWA and urged students and the younger generation to take the lessons well.
The chief guest also appreciated the programme and appealed to students not to get involved in such harmful activities.
In art competition, Gyan Tshering Lepcha stood first followed by Sukra Gurung, Mani Raj Limboo and Pedenla Pakhrin. Six consolation prizes were also awarded.
The function concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Kursongmit Lepcha, vice president, DYWA.   The function was also supported by Sneha Kinetic Power Project Ltd. (SKPPL).
