GANGTOK, 09 June: Following several complaints from the
general public and tourists regarding overcharging by taxi drivers, the Motor
Vehicle Division, Transport Department, East District conducted surprise
checking from 26 May to 07 June. Interestingly, most of the vehicles challaned
during this checking were for violation of sections relating to lapses in documents.
As per a press release around 1000 vehicles were checked 7th
Mile J.N. Road, Rangpo, Mining, Sirwani, Middle Camp, Ranipool, Pakyong and
around Gangtok. As such a total of 325 vehicles were challaned for violation of
various sections like 177, 179, 180, 181, 190, 192 and 192A of the Motor
Vehicle Act, 1988.
