South runs for Green and Clean Sikkim

NAMCHI, 22 June [IPR]: As part of the Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014, ‘Greenathon (Harith Daud)’ on the theme ‘Run for a Green and Clean Sikkim’ was held here today, flagged off from Central Park.
Organized by the Forest Department, the Greenathon saw the participation of employees from all Government departments, students and general public. DC (South) Prabhakar Verma, ADM (South) Kapil Meena, SDM (HQ) Samdup Bhutia and other officials of the district administration also participated in the marathon.
The distance to be covered by the male participants was 10 kms (Central Park to Assangthang Helipad and back) and for female participants the distance to be covered was 5 kms (Central Park to Char Dham Phatak and back). There were 287 male runners and 192 female runners.
Bindiya Rai, Pratika Rai and Bishnu Maya Subba came in first, second and third respectively amongst the female runners while Sujan Rai, Srawan Rai and Shivan Limboo stood first, second and third respectively amongst the males. The marathon winners received trophies from the DC (South).
DC, Mr Verma called for collective involvement of people from all walks of life to join hands in saving the environment. He also asked the gathering to show positive participation in the upcoming ‘Ten Minutes to Earth’ program to be held on 25 June.
Prior to the flag off at Central Park, DFO (WL), Nischal Gautam provided a brief update about Paryavaran Mahotsav and its aims and objectives. He further informed about the various activities carried out by the Forest Department in South District for the successful implementation of the Mahotsav.
Assistant Director Sports, N K Chettri laid out the guidelines to be followed by the participants during the marathon and informed them of amenities provided like availability of drinking water at every 2.5 kms and special arrangement for female participants.
This program was also supported by Police, Fire, Health and Sports Departments and drinking water amenities with head gear like caps for the participants was sponsored by NHPC Balutar.
