GANGTOK, 19 June: A day-long awareness training programme on organic farming and certification was organized by Mevedir at Barang Ward No 1 under Tumin GPU on 18 June.
A Mevedir press release informs that the main objective of the programme was to motivate farmers and sensitize them on the opportunities presented by organic farming. The programme was attended by more than 50 farmers of the area.
Approval Committee President, Tulsi Adhikari, Ward Panchayat, Prem Prashad Adhikari and VLW Palden Bhutia also spoke on the principles, benefit and value of organic farming. They also emphasized on the importance of enhancing production from the certified fields so that the benefits could trickle down to the beneficiaries of the GPU.
The programme also included sessions for video presentations and questions and answers during which farmers inquired about the management practices in organic farming. They also showed interest in preparation of organic pesticides and liquid manure to use in their farms.
