GANGTOK, 15 June: With the class XII results out, the admission process in colleges across the state have begun. There are 11 colleges under Sikkim University here, including the Himalayan Pharmacy Institute, Majhitar.
The Sikkim Government College, Tadong which has around 800 seats has been receiving a huge number of applications. Speaking on the large number of applicants for the various courses the college has to offer, Principal B Kharel says that the government will have to look into this issue of rise in number of students seeking admission into the college every year.
Dean SGC-Tadong, S Pradhan informs that the college is only distributing its prospectus as of now.
Collection of forms/ prospectus started on 05 June, while the dates for submission of filled in forms along with necessary documents will be held from 16 to 20 June, he adds.
"We have a capacity of 800 students at present but we are expecting to increase it to 900 seats if required", said Mr Pradhan.
The college offers 120 seats in B.Sc [Hon], 120 in B.Com [Hon] and 550 in B.A [Hon]. The cut off percentage for admission in all the courses is 55% while the cut off % is 70% for Vocational studies.
“Admission will be granted on merit as well as the number of seats available,” informs the Dean.
For SGC-Burtuk, the distribution of prospectus started on 05 June as well and ended on 12 June. The college has distributed 555 copies of prospectus so far with 430 for B.A and 125 for B.Com.
Assistant Prof., SGC Burtuk, Sabita Tamang informs that the college has a capacity of 250 seats in B.A and 150 in B.Com. The college is not looking at increasing its capacity and will stick to the 400 seats available, she added.
The submission of forms for admission will start from 14-18 June.
SGC Namchi has sold around 850 copies of its prospectus since the process started on 09 June. The college offers a total of 800 seats in B.A [500], B.Sc [150] and B.Com [150] courses.
Principal, SGC Namchi, Ravi Chhetri informs that submission of forms will be held from 18-23 June and the first merit list is expected to come out on 27 June. The last date for issuing of prospectus in 18 June.
Further, Dean SGC-Namchi, CR Sharma, says that a second merit list will be released depending on the availability of seats.
SGC-Gyalshing meanwhile, started issuing its prospectus on 10 June and the process will close on 19 June. The last date for submission of forms is also 19 June. Vice Principal, SGC-Gyalshing, Kesang Ongmu Bhutia, informs that the college offers only Bachelors in Tourism degree at present with around 100-150 seats.
“This college was established in 2011 and does not have enough space to accommodate a large number of students. But we will increase the number of seats in future. In fact, we have already put up a proposal to HRD Department on this issue and are hoping that it will be processed soon,” she adds.
