More than 150 paddlers begin contest for DB Sir Memorial Open Interschool TT trophy

GANGTOK, 09 May: More than 150 paddlers from different parts of the state are participating in the 9th edition of DB Sir Memorial Open Inter School Table Tennis Championship 2014 that started today here at Paljor Stadium indoor gymnasium hall. This time the tournament has a large number of new players mostly from West Sikkim and Ravangla.
The three-day championship was inaugurated by Sikkim Olympic Association general secretary, Kuber Bhandari this morning. It is being organized by Sikkim Table Tennis Academy, Tadong under the aegis of Sikkim Table Tennis Association and Sikkim Veterans Table Tennis Association.
In his inaugural address, Mr Bhandari appreciated the initiative and efforts of Sikkim Table Tennis Academy Director, BB Subba for starting this championship in memory of his father to provide a state-level platform for young paddlers. He congratulated the Academy for organizing the tournament every year without any break.
Extending his best wishes to participants, Mr Bhandari encouraged players to continuously play the game despite winning or losing. Stressing that participation is more important he added that sports help to inculcate team work, discipline and competitive spirit in players.
The inaugural session was also addressed by STTA member, CL Sharma following which the matches of the championship commenced. There are different events from Cadet to Veterans categories along with Junior boys Inter-School team championship and Junior girls Inter-School team championship.
The valedictory function of the championship will be held on Sunday.
