GANGTOK, 30 Apr: A taxi driver from Lachung suffered serious injuries while trying to flee from police custody at Mangan on the evening of 29 April. 37-year-old, Samdup Dorjee Lachungpa had been booked under section 169 of Sikkim Police Act, 2008 by Lachen Police Station on 29 April on the complaint of a group of tourists from Mumbai.
The driver had reportedly left this group of tourists stranded at Thangu while returning from Gurudongmar after an argument as the tourists suspected that he was in an intoxicated state and not in a condition to drive the vehicle safely.
Upon receipt of the complaint, Samdup Lachungpa was arrested by Lachen PS and sent for Medical Examination to Chungthang PHC. A press communiqué from the DIG-Range informs that since there was no Medical Officer available at Chungthang, the police team travelled to Mangan Hospital for the medical examination.
After completion of the medical exam, the police personnel and the accused halted at a hotel in Mangan Bazaar for dinner, from where the accused in an attempt to flee, jumped from the third floor of the adjoining building and sustained serious injuries. He was immediately referred to Gangtok for treatment and is undergoing treatment at CRH Manipal. His condition is reported to be critical.
A criminal case u/s 224 of IPC (escape from custody) has been registered at Mangan PS and taken up for investigation. Departmental action is also being initiated against the police personnel under whose custody the accused had been sent for medical examination, the DIG-Range informs further.
