World Autism Awareness Day observed with resolve to improve care REBYNA RANA

GANGTOK, 02 Apr: Spastics Society of Sikkim [SSS] observed “World Autism Awareness Day” here at their centre in Development Area today. Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted or repetitive behavior.

Addressing the function, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department, GP Upadhaya, who was present as the chief guest applauded the work of the Spastics Society since its inception. He also lauded the HRD Department’s efforts to provide the best facility to differently abled children of the state.

Mr Upadhaya informed that there are also plans of sending a team of doctors and Anganwadi workers for training at the National Institute of Mentally Handicapped in Delhi. He also assured that the differently abled youth will be provided employment according to their capabilities and convenience.

Treasurer, SSS, CP Dhakal, presented a report on the activities of the Spastics Society where he reported that since it was formed, the entire team of SSS has been putting all its efforts into providing the best education and special care to differently abled children.

He informed that one crore children in the country have been diagnosed with autism so far and no definite cause has been identified as yet.

Mr Dhakal highlighted the significance of the day and said that the day also seeks to create awareness on autism amongst teachers, health workers as well as parents. Thanking the Social Welfare Department for providing 11 acre land for the society Mr Dhakal expressed dismay over the UD&HD delaying the approval of the allotment order.   

During the function, two differently abled athletes of SSS, Shivu Chhetri and Pema Gurung who participated in the national championship in New Delhi recently, were felicitated by the chief guest with cash prize of Rs, 2,000 each.

The function was also addressed by the Principal SSS, RP Dhakal along with president of Sikkim Parent’s Association, Gangtok, Kuber Dahal, and Executive Member [SSS], Dr. Indira Chhetri.

During the function, autistic children of the SSS also gave some cultural performances. The function was also attended by the Arjuna awardee [1983], Jaslal Pradhan, and parents.
