GANGTOK, 05 Feb: A task force has been put in place by the state government for the execution of some major centrally funded infrastructural projects being undertaken in the state. While these projects have been underway for several years the purpose of the task force is to see that there is timely completion of the works and that the projects are operationalised within the scheduled time frame.
Most of these projects such as the Railway link to Sikkim and the alternate highway have been pending for a long time with little or no significant progress ever since they were contemplated and announced as feasible.
All the listed infrastructural development projects that come under the terms of reference of this task force, headed by the Chief Secretary as Chairperson, are being funded by the central government and come under various central government ministries.
These include the Airport being constructed at Pakyong which is under the Civil Aviation Ministry; the Sevoke to Rangpo Railway link under the Railways Ministry; the construction of the alternate route to Sikkim which supposedly has been approved from and cuts through Jalpaiguri and emerges at Rhenock, Sikkim and is under the Road Transport & Highways Ministry and finally the upgradation works on the national highway 31A which is also under the Road Transport and Highways Ministry.
The key purpose in putting up such a task force is to identify bottlenecks and potential problems that are likely to crop up in the phases leading to and during construction; subsequently the task force is then to take timely corrective action to ensure the completion of these projects in Sikkim.
All action taken or to be taken are to be communicated to the Ministry of DoNER.
Besides the CS other members of the Task Force include the Principal Secretary, Finance; Development Commissioner; Secretaries, Transport, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Roads & Bridges and representatives of concerned central government ministries including Railways, Civil Aviation and Roads.
Also included as a member is a representative of Ministry of DoNER, Joint Secretary, VB Pathak.
