Training on weaving and bamboo crafts begins

GANGTOK, 21 Jan: Three-month Capacity Building training programme in Rari / Lukuni weaving at Sisneybas and another in Bamboo Crafts at North Regoh, East Sikkim under Border Area Development Programme began today.
A press release informs that 15 weavers and 15 craft persons will be undergoing the training sponsored by Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, and implemented by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Government of Sikkim.
The training was inaugurated at Sisneybas, North Regoh, by Chairman – cum – Area MLA Regu, Puran Gurung today. The programme was also attended by Zilla Panchayat member, all the Panchayat members of Regu Gram Panchayat Unit, local gentry and public of the area.
Addressing the gathering the chief guest, Puran Gurung urged the weavers to become self- reliant after this training. He pledged support to weavers in forming SHGs and also thanked the department and government for organizing the training to uplift weavers and craft persons of the area, it is mentioned.
Jigme Pintso Bhutia [Assistant Director, DHH] informed the gathering about the programme and the different schemes and programmes being formulated by the central government to uplift weavers like, Health and Life Insurance for weavers, 10% Subsidy on yarn purchase through Yarn Pass Book, subsidy on transportation and yarn depot, Weavers Credit Card (WCC) etc. The Master Trainers for both the disciplines were engaged from the local area, it is added.
