GANGTOK, 27 Jan: An alert trader at Lall Bazaar shopping complex led the Sadar police here to arrest one person with fake currency notes on 26 January. Ali Hussein Sheikh was picked up at Lall Bazaar by Sadar police personnel as he was attempting to pass off fake currency notes to a vendor at the market in exchange of certain items. Along with his arrest the police also seized from his possession a total Rs. 26,000 in counterfeits.
Of the fake notes seized, ten were in Rs. 1,000 denomination notes and the rest were of Rs. 500 denomination, SP [East] Manoj Tiwari informed. He further informed that the accused has been booked under section 489 A of the IPC.
This is not the first time that Ali Hussein, a resident of Malda, West Bengal, has been in Gangtok to pass off fake notes. It is informed that it was his modus operandi to come to Sikkim at intervals to pass of the fake notes by purchasing various items.
Some weeks ago, he is informed to have come to Lall Bazaar and approached the same vendor to buy some items. This vendor, a woman, later recognized the money handed to her to be fake. This time on 26 January, when Ali Hussein approached to buy some items from her again she was ready and alerted the police. The Sadar police personnel soon arrived at the place and picked up the accused. The accused is informed to have also gone to Melli on the same operation.
