The family of the young mother who died at childbirth at the Mangan district hospital, allegedly due to negligence, has filed a petition with the Judicial Magistrate, District courts, Mangan. The complaint filed seeks the court’s intervention into the lack of proper health services at the hospital and particularly into the incident of alleged negligence which led to the death of Dil Kumari Gurung on the night of 23 December. She was only 25 years of age at the time. The JM, north district, it is informed, has forwarded this to the Consumer Redressal Forum for further action.
The petition attributes her death to the lack of adequate health care and negligence of gynaecologist at the district hospital. The family members, including the husband, Mahendra Gurung and the father, are residents of Yuksom, West Sikkim.
The application states that the late Dil Kumari Gurung was admitted to the district Hospital at around 6 pm on 23 December where she gave a birth to a child at around 11 pm. The gynaecologist who supposed to be on duty was not available at hospital and on being called by the doctor on duty at hospital over the phone instead of rushing into the emergency she apparently instructed the other doctor over the phone. It further records that the doctor had prescribed some medicines but the medical store was closed. However, when after persistent effort it was opened, the medicines were not available. Even the three alternative medicines that were suggested were not available at the store. Later the patient developed serious complications and eventually succumbed to excessive bleeding and low blood pressure at around 1 am that night. By then the concerned gynaecologist had arrived.
The complaint letter appeals for compensating the family especially since the new born child along with the earlier daughter of the deceased, a 7 year old, have been rendered orphans due to the alleged negligence. The family has also sought strict legal action against the concerned medical officer at the hospital “...so that health delivery at Mangan Hospital will be effective and there is no more loss of life due to negligence”.
