GANGTOK, 10 Jan: The College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology (CAEPHT), Central Agricultural University (CAU) centre of the All India Coordinated Research Project on Increased Utilization of Animal Energy with Enhanced System Efficiency (UAE) conducted three days training in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendara (KVK) Geyzing recently.
42 farmers, including 18 women from Lingchom village near Geyzing, participated.
Dr. RK Tiwari, P.I, UAE along with Dr. Rinchen Ongmoo Bhutia, Subject matter specialist (Animal Science), KVK West Sikkim inaugurated the training and addressed the farmers highlighting the usefulness of animal based farming system in west Sikkim. It included display and demonstration of nutritive feed formulation, animal drawn multi-purpose tool frame with seeding attachments, animal drawn improved wedge plough, animal drawn improved peg type puddler, animal drawn improved single row potato digger, animal drawn two row improved zero till seed drill, manual two row rice transplanter, manual cono weeder, manual twin wheel hand hoe, hand maize sheller, large cardamom harvesting knife and improve sickle.
Dr. Rinchen Ongmoo Bhutia, subject matter specialist (Animal Science) explained about health care and sanitation measurers for bullocks especially during working seasons.
Dr. Kishore Thapa, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, Geyzing, west Sikkim presented the practical aspects of health care and sanitation measures. He explained about the feed (concentrate and roughage) to be fed to the animals depending upon the breeds and age especially during work/off seasons. Animal drawn improved equipment for maize, mustard, blackgram, buckwheat, pea and potato were demonstrated by Dr. R.K Tiwari, P.I, UAE for cultivation on valley and terraces. The farmers have learned the operation of the improved equipment and experienced the benefits.
Dr. B.K Mehta, Livestock Assistant, CAEPHT displayed and explained the use of herbal medicines included in the primary health care kit for bullocks. He attended the queries of the farmers besides giving tips for precautionary measures to prevent sickness of the animals especially during working seasons.
One progressive farmer Mr. Tulsi Prasad Sharma of village Lingchom discussed about the traditional cultivation practices and expressed about the usefulness of the improved equipment for major field crops of their area.
Dr. Tiwari, Principal Investigator, UAE along with Dr. Laxman Sharma, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Geyzing, West Sikkim awarded the certificates and provided the primary health care kits to the participating farmers. Dr. Laxman Sharma, (Programme Coordinator, KVK, Geyzing) urged the farmers to share their knowledge gained on improved equipment with other farmers of the region.
