GANGTOK, 09 Dec: Secretary, Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department, G Upadhyay, today met Sikkim students enrolled at the Himalayan Group of Professional Institutions, Kala Amb, Himachal Pradesh, who have been going through a traumatic few days owing to clashes with another student group there.
As informed by the Secretary, he met with all the Sikkim students today together with the local administration including the SDM and SDPO and police officials.
The Sikkim students at the institution have been appealing for better security measures and had petitioned the Sikkim government for security after they had allegedly been threatened by a group of students from Haryana at the institute.
Mr. Upadhyay informed that he spent about 3 to 4 hours with the students today and requested the local authorities including the Station House Officer of the Kala Amb Police Station to be present.
The meeting went off well with the local authorities assuring full support and also forwarding their contact information to the Sikkim students in case the threats continued.
In fact, as informed by Secretary Upadhyay the local police assured the students to put behind bars anyone who continued to threaten them should the students be able to provide names and other details.
“The authorities categorically assured to provide security and take action on any complaint from the students,” said Mr. Upadhyay. Local authorities informed Mr Upadhyay that Kala Amb is a small hill town where no incidence of violence has occurred in the past 10 years.
On the other hand, Mr. Upadhyay during his visit to the institution also requested the college administration to provide those Sikkim students who were residing outside the college be accommodated in the college campus to which the college administration agreed.
The HGPI is affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh University and is an institution of repute. As informed the situation there seems to be returning to normal, for the Sikkim students. There are informed to be 71 students from Sikkim, 69 of whom have gone there on scholarships provided by the state government.
