GANGTOK, 10 Dec: In an initiative introduced as “Farmers First” policy of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra here launched a “Farmers’ Participatory Seed Production Programme” for Yellow Sarson (var. B-9) at Sajong village of East Sikkim on 07 December, 2013.
40 kgs of certified seeds of yellow sarson was distributed to interested farmers on the day, an official press release informs. These 40 kilos can produce more than 40 quintals of quality seeds which will be an important step towards furthering the cause of organic farming, the release adds.
Initiating the programme Dr. JK Singh, SMS (Plant Breeding), KVK, East Sikkim, briefed the farmers about the concept of Seed Village for production of quality seeds to empower farmers through input-support system.
Chandan Kapoor, Scientist (Plant Breeding) ICAR, Sikkim Centre, in turn spoke on package and practices of quality seed production of yellow sarson. He emphasized on strict maintenance of isolation distance as the crop is highly cross-pollinated.
KD Bhutia, ex-Zilla Panchayat Member and the farmer representative of Samridhi Group responded positively on the newly set up “seed village concept” for quality seed production and expressed his gratitude to ICAR Sikkim Centre for selecting Sajong for the Seed village programme of Yellow sarson. He requested the farmers to follow the recommended technology for successful production of the quality seeds.
Boniface Lepcha, Programme Assistant (Soil Science), KVK, East Sikkim, briefed the gathering about the importance of the organic seeds production of agricultural and horticultural crops to enhance the seed replacement rate in the state.
The programme had Dr. RK Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, as chief guest. In his remarks, he urged farmers for production of quality seeds. He also visited the fields selected for the seed production programme.
Dr. N. Johnson Singh SMS (Plant Protection), KVK East Sikkim, ICAR Sikkim Centre coordinated the programme also interacted with the farmers on topics like pests and disease maintenance measures for yellow sarson. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Tejoshi Khawas, SRF, NICRA.
