Hunting expedition ends in fatality

HUNTER SHOOTS COUSIN BY MISTAKE
GANGTOK, 13 Dec: A hunting trip turned tragic today with the death of one of the hunters in what is believed to have been an accident.
Rajen Rai, around 30 years old, was accidentally shot by his older cousin, 53-year-old Bir Bahadur Rai as they were hunting deer in the forests below Khamdong, East Sikkim. The incident took place at around 11:30 a.m. this morning. Bir Bahadur Rai is reported to have surrendered and is now under custody of the Singtam police.
According to reports, the two, both belonging to Beng Thansing under Singtam police jurisdiction, set out on a deer hunt at Repti Khola; deer is said to be found in the jungles by the khola and in all likelihood this was not their first hunting trip. This is suggested by the fact that on spotting a deer, Bir Bahadur Rai with the gun went after the deer from one side and Rajen Rai came in from the other side to trap the deer.
However, the plan turned fatal as Bir Bahadur Rai, the older of the two, mistook Rajen, coming in from the other side, to be the prey. He shot at what seemed to him was the deer through the shrubs and undergrowth and the bullet hit Rajen Rai on his left shoulder. It is reported that he succumbed on the spot.
The Singtam police led by SHO, Chundi Chophel, rushed to the spot in the afternoon on news of the incident and arrested Bir Bahadur Rai and seized the weapon of offence. The weapon is said to be an unlicensed country-made single barrel gun. The accused has been charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code as well as under relevant sections of the Arms Act for possession of an illegal weapon.
