GANGTOK, 06 Dec: Governor Shriniwas Patil and the first lady of Sikkim, Rajanidevi Patil, have expressed heartfelt condolences over the demise of the civil rights crusader and the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
In his condolence message the Governor has said, “popularly known as Madiba in South Africa, Mr Mandela was an icon of anti-apartheid movement and spent his entire young age in prison for 27 years at Robben island. Madiba selflessly and passionately stood up for the rights of the people who were discriminated and suppressed because of the apartheid policy of the then African regime. He was a symbol of forgiveness for millions of people around the world. Madiba was also passionate for sports and charity, and under his dynamic leadership and passion, South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 1995 which was a turning point in rejuvenating and uniting the whole nation.
May the Almighty bestow his grace especially upon the entire people of South Africa at this time of sorrow”.
Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and his wife, Tika Maya Chamling, have also conveyed deep and heartfelt condolences on the demise of Nelson Mandela.
The Chief Minister in his condolence message has said that Nelson Mandela was a true Gandhian and the first coloured President of South Africa who fought apartheid, spent 27 years in prison and led his country to democracy. He had a vision of the society in which none is exploited, oppressed or dispossessed by another.
In his condolence message the Chief Minister has wished for strength and courage to his near and dear ones especially the people of South Africa to bear this irreparable loss in their hour of sorrow and grief.
